One third of the way through and it's tough going... a book I purchased because it had a huge potential, but unfortunately it reads more like the outline for a book than a novel. The characters remain undeveloped, more caricatures and stereotypes than people. Everything from hunting elephant to fighting off attacking natives is glossed over. Being more than passingly familiar with Southern Africa and its history the way substantive historical events are brushed aside with a few hasty words is disappointing to say the least! Also, the editing is TERRIBLE! It seems that someone just ran spell check set to "auto-correct' and no human being read the manuscript for context. Words are out of place (simply WRONG) and the book abounds with sentence fragments, missing verbs, sentences without subjects and repetitive descriptive phrases. If I read about the mournful three note cry of the fish eagle one more time I might just toss my kindle at the wall! I was hoping to find another Southern Africa saga similar to early Wilbur Smith - THIS AIN'T IT! Unless things improve drastically in the next section I'll just stick with Tony Park!

Echoes from the Past The Brigandshaw Chronicles Book 1 edition by Peter Rimmer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A good introduction to a promising series, the pace was a little slow at the beginning, which is not unusual as there is much story background to be established. The pace picked up as the story unfolds and was maintained thereafter. Interesting characters offer numerous storyline possibilities for the series. While not quite up to Wilbur Smith, I was fully entertained, and will read the next installment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this quite lengthy book, written as the first in a series progressing through time. The locale is Southern Africa, the author blends scenery and wildlife into the story in a most acceptable way so one is constantly learning about the Africa he clearly loves, as well as being carried along with the story.
The story culminates with the ending of the Boer war, includes the points of view of Boers, British and diverse Africans.
I have read every book Wilbur Smith has written that takes place in Africa. Mr. Rimmer ' s book equals Smith's early works and surpasses his recent ones. I like Rimmer ' characters and his story is based on actual happenings and how they affected his characters. On to the rest of the series.
This is a good story told during the period of history before and during the Boer War, The story is told with just enough detail of the historical events happening at the time and told as a background to the characters that are primary to the story. The story is not overwhelmed with detail but has just enough that one can picture the African bush with all of its beauty and dangers. What I liked most was the way the author related the outcome of events without having to detail the events as they actually happened. Also, Rimmer has some thoughtful observations about the British Empire at the time what truly led up to the war. It is ineresting to see today what history then had upon South African history today.
This is my first book written by Peter Rimmer, I didn't expect to enjoy reading it as much as other authors who have written a story not only as a story but full of the history and experiences in Africa, BUT Peter Rimmer is by far at the top. A book that kept me reading way after midnight and into the early hours. Thank you I look forward to reading another Peter Rimmer book.
I have just finished reading Echoes From the Past and I feel so ----- I don't know how to discribe the feeling. The need to continue learning about people that I feel are friends. And enjoying seeing the animals and the beautiful land and the peace of hearing the music of nature, the birds, frogs, water Rapids and seeing the butterflies . It's written in a way that's magical. Along with the beauty , being realistic you have to have some evil , the wars. The history makes you feel like you are learning something as well as enjoying a great novel. I found it very moving the way the feelings and motives of both sides of the conflicts black against white, Boer against English are described and the writings by the reporter were very insiteful. I read this book in a week which is fast for me. I just had to continue and find out what would happen next and now I still have that feeling. Where's that next book ? I do have one criticism . Peter, you need a good proof reader. There were lots of miss spelled words but it didn't interfer with my enjoyment one bit . Thank you for writing it. Jenny
I bought this series based on my previous experience of Rimmers writing. I was interested in the clever way in which he places his characters in a fascinating time in history. His research has brought out many facts previously known only to very few and his political and historical perspectives certainly did not disappoint. They added to my understanding of that time and opened my eyes to some differing views to the school taught quick and dirty we got given.
As with most authors there are some repetitive descriptions that grate but I managed to put them out of mind in viewing the overall series
I think they’re thoroughly readable. I hope in a hundred years time some then understanding author can make as much sense of the current history and enlighten his readers with as interesting a read as Mr Rimmer has in this.
